COVID-19 and Prevention Science and what you can do.

Updated 3/24/2020, 7:27 pm

COVID-19 has changed the world and how we offer prevention services within a matter of weeks. There are many current and future challenges facing prevention science. Many of the vulnerable children, youth, adults, and families that our membership aims to reach now face new challenges related to social distancing, food insecurity, school closures and economic uncertainty.

SPR members have an important role to play to support prevention efforts at this critical time, the best we can:

  • serve as an important resource to the policy community to interpret the science and inform the conversation;
  • encourage the use of evidence-based strategies and support the use of research in adapting programs to virtual service provision; and
  • use research on best practices to support service providers using remote methods.

We are encouraging the membership to raise up their voice as contributors to the conversation about effective prevention strategies, promoting protective factors around areas such as stress and anxiety, trauma, parental stress, interpersonal violence, conflict resolution, substance use, mental health promotion, school success, and more.

We are encouraging members to connect with us online @SPROrg to share their knowledge, initiatives, and resources through their social media accounts using the hashtag #WeAreSPR.
